Getaway: The Winter Vacation I Didn’t Know I Needed
I think that winter is fine, but not ideal, especially when I’m trying to enjoy nature. This December, my friend and I are looking to take a weekend trip as a way to relax amidst all the holiday craziness. We wanted something that offered a traditional outdoor experience with a slightly elevated feel. After scouring online, a coworker recommended Getaway.
She said that her Getaway cabin was like being in a snow globe – truly magical. Seemed to be a bit of a stretch to me. Plus, when I asked her what she did all weekend, she said they went on snow hikes. Hiking + snow? I’m not outdoorsy and this vacation seemed less than relaxing to me if all I could do was hike (more realistically, crawl) through the snow.
Despite my hesitation, my friend was so excited when they heard about Getaway that I gave it a chance. If anything, they’d get their fill of nature, and I’d be reading my new mystery novel inside.
Pulling up to our cabin, my jaw dropped – it was a winter wonderland. Coming from a city, I mostly associate winter with dirty slush but our outpost was surrounded by crisp, clean snow. The cabin itself looked picturesque, nestled in the forest like it was straight out of a movie.
I was still unsure if this trip would be a success and was freezing when we stepped out of the car. Hurrying inside I found that the cabin was just the right amount of space for two people and had all my creature comforts: bathroom, towels, and kitchen.
Jumping into bed with the heat turned up and buried under the covers of our queen-sized bed, I knew I’d be happy if I spent the whole weekend just like that.
The huge window next to the bed gave me the perfect balance of nature and warmth. It was a great loophole to embrace the wilderness without the cold. While it was a peaceful spot to relax, Getawayanticipated our need for entertainment.
They provided a deck of cards and we got to burn off some energy with a friendly, but competitive, game of Go Fish. It was a great dose of old fashioned fun (aka a cell phone detox).
Later on, I finished my book and was disappointed I hadn’t brought another. Getaway saved me with their bedside bookshelf. I got to page through their little collection and even got into reading How to Stay Alive in the Woods.
Dinner was another great surprise. The cabin provided all the cooking supplies we needed – no need to bring any of our pots or pans. We had a simple meal, in nature: a true gift.
For dessert, we even lit the fire pit outside and roasted marshmallows to have some old fashioned s’mores. I never realized winter camping could be so warm and toasty.
After the first day inside I started to get a bit restless and decided to brave the outdoors and go on a mini winter hike — surprisingly, I loved it. Thankfully, it was more of a walk and truly the refresh I needed. The best part though was coming back to our cozy cabin where I had some leftover marshmallows to snack on.
Overall, Getawaywas definitely the right choice this winter. The restful, snowy backdrop was a picturesque holiday escape and Winter camping has never been so warm and stress-free.
So grateful that our friend recommended Getaway to us, despite my initial worries. I can’t wait to use Getaway again for our next trip and try a different outpost. This time we went to Blake Brook outside of Boston but Getaway has outposts across the country and they’re only 2 hours (or less!) from cities like New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Washington, and Houston. Plus, it starts at $200 a night.
Getaway is the perfect winter vacation for nature lovers and homebodies alike.
