Mindful Chef Or Green Chef? Which Do We Recommend?

Everywhere you turn, people are talking about recipe boxes. With new companies popping up all around us, it's so hard to keep track. What makes one truly stand out? Are they healthy? And, most importantly, are they even worth it?!

Our editors have looked into recipe boxes and found two of the main contenders in the healthy-eating space: Mindful Chef and Green Chef.

We compared the two and here's what we found:

Key Similarities:

  • Both deliver pre-portioned ingredients and recipes to your door
  • Both have flexible subscriptions
  • Both offer vegan options
  • Both are focussed on healthy eating

Key Differences:

  • Green Chef offers Keto, Lower Carb, Vegetarian, Balanced and Vegan plans
  • Mindful Chef offers Gluten and Dairy-free options
  • Green Chefs starts at £2.82 per meal - Mindful Chef starts at £5.12 per meal

Green Chef Overview

Green Chef's site is super simple to navigate, with very clearly laid out plan options. They're the only recipe box we've come across that caters to such a variety of specialised diets, including Keto, Lower Carb, Vegetarian, Balanced, and Vegan. Starting at only £2.82 a meal, Green Chef is more affordable. You can get 3-4 meals a week for either 2 or 4 people.

We decided to give the Vegetarian plan a shot. Meals like Sesame Crusted Tofu with Spicy Sambal Coated Noodles, Saag Paneer with Garlic & Coriander Naan, and Golden Turmeric Cauliflower Curry with Black Rice and Flaked Almonds are to die for.

Our box arrived on time and we were thoroughly impressed by how fresh the ingredients are. It's apparent that they're well-sourced. The colorful recipe cards are straightforward and easy-to-follow and the recipes take 20-30 minutes to make. The flavours are delicious. We can't believe something this nutritious tastes so good! We like that their Vegetarian meals aren't packed with tons of "filler" carbs like other recipe boxes.

Mindful Chef

Although Mindful Chef's site is informative, it's slightly confusing given that you choose your delivery date before selecting a plan and choosing meals like most services. You can choose up to 5 recipes for 2-5 people, but, aside from gluten free, they don't cater to other specialised diets.

For a fair comparison, we chose Veggie meals. Three recipes - Tofu peanut satay skewers & black rice, Persian squash, pomegranate & pistachios, and Smoky chimichurri & black beans with sweet potatoes - came to £35.00, which is £11.6 per meal!

When our box arrived we were impressed with the ingredients but thought the recipe cards ought to be more detailed. The meals took 30-40 minutes and were easy to prepare. But when we sat down to eat, how disappointing. Sadly, they weren't as satisfying as our Green Chef meals. Frankly, we'd like bigger potions and bolder flavours.

Final Thoughts

Overall, our experiences with both recipe boxes were fine. Each provided good food and the convenience we were looking for. However, we'll definitely be keeping our Green Chef subscription.

When it comes to the meals themselves, Green Chef's are yummier and more satisfying overall. There's a lot to be said for the number of diets they cater to. Following a specialty diet can be so much simpler with Green Chef.

Green Chef's menu is ever-changing and offers a variety of international cuisines each week, so you'll never be bored. We're so impressed with how fresh the ingredients are, too.

Having ingredients along with recipe cards delivered to your doorstep every week makes dinnertime a breeze. Plus, the pre-portioned ingredients significantly reduce prep time, so dinner is on the table in only 30 minutes!

If you're hesitant about which recipe box to go with, give Green Chef a try.
