I had three months to go until my wedding and it was crunch time. Literally.
I had sworn I wouldn't let something that was supposed to be fun—a night I was so grateful for and looking forward to—become something that felt like a job. And yet, guess what, planning my wedding had turned into a full time job! I already had a demanding job. One of those I eat protein bars at my standing desk in the office because I don't have time for lunch kinds. It was the crunches that broke me... or rather lack thereof! The one bootcamp class I could make after work that I'd been mentally banking on as my get-whipped-into-shape elixir was always totally booked, which put more pressure on me to cut out sugar, carbs, and every other tasty food from my diet. I didn't have time for that, and didn't want to eat bland "diet food" either.
So I decided it was time to ask for some advice. I turned to the coworker my friend affectionately nicknamed my "life mentor" who had not only navigated marriage but also a newly born baby, for some much needed wisdom about getting wedding ready without totally stressing out. She listened, then teasingly told me to "get a hold of myself." (I mean, complaining to a new mom, what was I thinking?) She suggested I try what she did to lose the baby weight: Splendid Spoon. It's a subscription for plant-based, ready-to-eat smoothies and soups that would get delivered to my door weekly. Splendid Spoon didn't require cooking and could be grabbed to eat on the go. No thinking, planning, chopping, or shopping. It sounded like something I could actually do without stressing out.
By having a Splendid Spoon smoothie for breakfast and soup for lunch, my coworker lost the baby weight even without time to prepare meals much less go to the gym. Even though it's not a weight loss plan, people often lose weight on Splendid Spoon because the portions are controlled and all the meals are super low in carbs, sugar, and sodium. She said it sounded like I was in a similar situation—looking for a weight-loss and get-healthy strategy without the time and stress of planning—and she was right. What she didn't tell me was just how much I would love the food!

I chose to get five smoothies and five soups delivered weekly, which only cost $9.50 per meal. At first, I couldn't believe it. I had expected the kinds of mediocre-at-best frozen meals I was used to finding in the grocery store, but these were genuinely way more delicious and fresh tasting than even the recipes I cook myself. I looked up the ingredients and found out I was eating organic vegetables, superfoods like acai and almonds for energy, and everything was vegan, gluten-free, and GMO free. Yet the meals each cost less than when I grab a coffee and pastry from Starbucks. It was almost embarrassing to think what I used to eat comparatively, because these high quality Splendid Spoon meals were just as convenient as my protein bars. I loved all of the meals, but my absolute favorites were the Blackberry Basil smoothie and the Green Dream with avocado and pineapple. For lunch, my favorites were the worldly recipes like Chana Potato Stew and Mexican Tomato Soup. The subscription let me choose exactly what meals came in my box each week, so I made sure to add extras of my most-craved favorites.
Within a month I felt great, and I even got that bridal "glow" you hear people talk about because my skin was clearer after cutting my sugar and sodium intake nearly in half. Low and behold, when it came down to crunch time, the real crunch time — as in, the day of my wedding — I slid into my dress down six pounds after what felt like not even trying. I still use the smoothies as a weekly "reset" option, and know anytime I need a boost of healthy eating without the time and stress of planning, I can use Splendid Spoon to sprinkle some wellness into my life.
