Last year, I went on my very first solo trip to Disney World. I decided to treat myself to the trip after going through heartbreak. My ex and I swore that we’d go to Disney World together. So, in the name of self-love, I decided to take myself instead.
I was initially anxious about the prospect of traveling to a theme park alone, especially since Disney’s all about families and friends. But I ended up having one of the best trips of my life. No one even noticed that I was sitting on the Pirates of the Caribbean ride by myself.
Apparently, people do it all the time.
But if you’re not a theme park lover, it’s totally fine. There are so many stunning beaches in the area that are perfect for solitude and self-reflection. And beaches are a marvelous place to catch up on your reading, something you can’t really do when you’re in a group — or glued to your phone.
Portland, Maine

For those looking to go solo without the emphasis on the solo part of the trip, New Orleans is amazing. It’s a city brimming with music, adventure, and colorful excitement and packed with people who are dying to be your friend.
Seriously. When I visited New Orleans for a weekend, back in 2018, I probably made more friendships in those two days than I have in the span of two years. You’ll meet people everywhere you go. Everyone’s in good spirits due to the cheerful atmosphere all around them.
Go ahead, wolf down a po’boy in the French Quarter’s “Verti Marte”, talk to the spirits in Voodoo shops, or dance the night away to live jazz music, New Orleans is just your place.
Boston, Massachusetts
With its cobblestone streets, swaying willow trees, and intellectual vibe, Boston is a fantastic destination for the solo traveler. I personally fell in love with the city when I attended college right in the heart of Boston.
I’m from Chicago, so when I first stepped foot in Mass, the New England vibe felt totally foreign. Although I wasn’t used to the sea salt air, the thick Boston accents, or the cozy libraries nestled in nearly every corner, it’s safe to say that I immediately felt at home.
In fact, my passion for going on insanely long walks began while I was living in Beantown, since I was so eager to explore the streets of such a historically rich city. As a young woman, I never once felt unsafe walking the winding cobblestone streets alone.
While you’re there, be sure to check out the Esplanade on the Charles River. Oh, and the Public Garden. Both are free of charge, yet immersing yourself in such lovely nature will make you feel like a million bucks.
Wicker Park, Chicago
I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, and as a result, I’ve visited the city quite often. Although I will always love the town I grew up in, as well as the city itself, I’ve always felt the most at home in Wicker Park.
For those unfamiliar, Wicker Park is a specific area in Chicago. Although it was a hassle for me to get there, days spent in Wicker Park were thrilling. From its indie record shops, to its endless art fairs, what a fabulous place for anyone in tune with the underground scene,.
If you’re big on the arts, spending time in Wicker Park is an absolute must. The area is so rich with music and culture that it makes Williamsburg, Brooklyn seem straight-laced.
